Event Details

Facebook & Girls in Tech are hosting our first joint 24-hour Developer Garage and Hackathon focused on building great social applications.

What does it mean to build a web app that's social by default? Ever wonder how to get your product ideas from a paper napkin to getting launched so that hundreds of millions of people can use them? Do you have questions on how to integrate with Facebook's APIs? Are you interested in learning more about how to monetize your Facebook applications?

Speakers include:

  • Mike Schroepfer (VP of Engineering - Facebook)
  • Sandra Liu Huang (Platform Manager - Facebook)
  • Julie Tung (Platform Engineer - Facebook)
  • Jocelyn Goldfein (Dir. Engineering - Facebook)
  • Sandy Jen (Founder - Meebo)
  • Jennifer Pahlka (Founder - Code for America)
  • and more....

IMPORTANT

As we're trying to have a great group of hackers and entrepreneurs, we're asking for a few minutes of work ahead of time if you'd like to participate. We're focused on holding a great event to help inspire more women in tech and provide education and community around building social experiences across the web.

To register, please choose one of the two options:

1) Either submit a Hackathon idea on this wiki: [Facebook & Girls in Tech Dev Garage/Hackathon wiki] and come prepared to hack!

OR

2) Purchase a $20 donation ticket where all of the proceeds will go to Girls in Tech.

We will only accept participants that complete one of the two participant options above.

The Hackathon

One of the best ways to have a great experience hacking is to spend some time before the event thinking about what you want to build. Often the best ideas are those that you don't normally work on. One of the benefits of an event like this is being able to work with others who complement your own skill set.

Have an idea of what you want to work on? Please throw it on the wiki below along with your name and what aspect(s) of the project you'd like to contribute to.

See an interesting idea? Edit the Facebook & Girls in Tech Dev Garage/Hackathon wiki to add your name to it and also share what aspect(s) of the project you'd like to contribute to.

Prizes!

No hackathon is complete without some great prizes. After brunch on Sunday every team will get a chance to share what they've been working on. We're pulling together a great panel of judges for the prizes and these are some of the criteria they'll be thinking about:

  • originality of idea/concept behind implementation (e.g. innovative, original, significant improvement on an already available app)
  • market potential of implementation (e.g. how big is the target segment, will advertisers pay for it, etc.)
  • customized aspects of the implementation (e.g. customized features per user)
  • usefulness of implementation (e.g. increases efficiency, solves a problem, etc)
  • intuitiveness and ease of use of implementation (e.g. ease of navigation)
  • potential for further development of implementation (e.g. addition of new levels, themes, etc.)

Hackathon Project ideas

Link to your hackathon ideas (create each project idea as a New Page, then link to it below).

Please include a summary of the idea, what skills you have and what you need (or join a team) in each page:

Please don't forget to also RSVP on Facebook!

We hope to see you there!

Cheers,
